How to Configure MacTCP

Once you have placed the setup files in their appropriate folder (PPP goes into Extensions, Config PPP and MacTCP go into Control Panels) and restarted your computer, go to your Apple Menu and choose MacTCP from the Control Panels. If you have an Open Transport system and you have a TCP/IP control panel instead, click here.

After MacTCP loads, you should see the picture above. Select the PPP icon and then click on More... If you do not see the PPP icon, then the PPP extension is not in your extensions folder.

Set up MacTCP for server addressing by selecting "Server" under "Obtain Address". Do not select dynamic or manual (static) addressing. thing.net will assign you a TCP/IP address.

At the top, under IP Address, select Class "C".

You do not need to enter a gateway or IP address.

You will also need to enter information under the Domain Name Server Information. For Domain enter thing.net. For IP Address enter 209.14.134.2 Select the Default radio button next to the address you just entered.

Your MacTCP should now look like the one in the picture above (it's ok, however, if the Gateway Address is 0.0.0.0. Our server will provide that information to your MacTCP as soon as you are connected).

Click on the OK button.

Now, restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

TCP/IP

Note: You must have Open Transport version 1.1.0 or higher. If you don't, please use Apple's 7.5.2 System Update 2.0 to update your system to version 7.5.3, which will give you the updated version of Open Transport.

To configure TCP/IP, make sure that TCP/IP is in your Control Panels and that PPP is in your Extensions.

Open TCP/IP from the Control Panels.

Click on the menu next to Connect via: and choose MacPPP, if MacPPP is not a choice you have not put the PPP extension into the extensions folder.

Click on the menu next to Configure: and choose Using PPP Server.

For Name Server address add (209.14.134.2). Your TCP/IP should now look like the picture above. If your screen looks different than this one, you might have the User Mode set to Advanced or Administration. To change this, go to User Mode in the Edit menu in TCP/IP and select Basic. You can now close this window.

Note: Older versions of FreePPP may conflict with the new Open Transport. You may need to download the newest version of FreePPP.

Config PPP Setup

After you've configured MacTCP, open Config PPP from your Control Panels. Next to PPP Server, choose thing.net, or if that's not an option, click on New... and enter thing.net as the PPP Server Name.

Next, click on Config... in order to set up Config PPP for thing.net.

Next to Port Speed, enter your modem's DTE data rate. For a 14000 bps link this is usually 19200 or 38400. For a 28800 bps link, the port speed should be set to 38400 or 57600.

Next to Flow Control you will want to enter CTS & RTS (DTR).

For access numbers other than NYC click here. In Manhattan (area code 212) dial 507 1410.

Next to Modem Init, enter your modem's init string. If you don't know it, look it up in the Tisk List.

Next, click on Authentication... and enter the user name and password provided to you by thing.net. After you've done this, click on OK and then click on Connect Script. If you're connecting to thing.net you won't need a connect script, so if there is one already there, make sure to delete it and set all the radio buttons to "Out" and make sure that nothing is checked under "<CR>". Click OK and then click Done and close the Config PPP box.

Restart your computer. Go to Control Panels and open Config PPP. Click on Open. Config PPP should now start dialing your modem. After it connects it will authenticate your login name and password and you should then have an established PPP connection which will be indicated by the words PPP UP underneath the now connected and smiling PPP faces icon.
