Setting up PPP for Windows

To connect to the Internet using Windows 95 you need to have the Dial-up Networking, the Dial-up Adapter and the TCP/IP Protocol installed.

Making sure Dial-up Networking is installed

Press the Start button from the Task-bar at the bottom of the screen.

Select Settings from the menu.

Next, select Control Panel from the next menu.

Next, Double-click on the Add/Remove Programs icon and this will bring up a window labeled Add/Remove Program Properties.

Single-click on the tab labeled Windows Setup at the top of the window.

Under the section labeled Components double-click on the Communications option in the list box.

You should now be in a new window titled Communications.

If Dial-Up Networking is checked then it is already installed. If the checkbox is not checked then check it and press OK. You'll be prompted for disks or a CD.

Making sure that the TCP/IP Protocol and the Dial-up Adapter are Installed

Press the Start button from the Task-bar at the bottom of the screen.

Select Settings from the menu.

Next, select Control Panel from the next menu.

Double-click on the Network icon and this will open up a new window labeled Network.

Make sure that the Configuration tab at the top of the window is selected.

In the list box make sure that Dial-Up Adapter and TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter are found on the list of installed network components.

If Dial-Up Adapter is not installed do the following:

Single-click on the Add button in the middle of the window.

This will open a new window titled Select Network Component Type.

Double-click on Adapter in the list box of installable network components, which will open a window titled Select Network Protocol.

Under the section labeled Manufacturers single-click on Microsoft.

Next, under the section labeled Network Protocols single-click on Dial-Up Adapter and single-click the OK button at the bottom of the window.

Dial-Up Adapter should now appear in the list box.

Press OK to the Network window and Windows 95 will prompt you for disks or a CD.

If TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter is not installed do the following:

Single-click on the Add button in the middle of the window. This will open a new window titled Select Network Component Type.

Double-click on Protocol in the list box of installable network components. Which will open a window titled Select Network Protocol.

Under the section labeled Manufacturers single-click on Microsoft.

Next, under the section labeled Network Protocols single-click on TCP/IP and single-click the OK button at the bottom of the window.

TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter should now appear in the list box.

Press OK to the Network window and Windows 95 will prompt you for disks or a CD.

NOTE: If you had to install either the Dial-Up Adapter or the TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter then you will need to re-start Windows 95.

Configuring TCP/IP Protocol for IP Addressing.

At this point Windows 95 should be ready to be configured for use with the Internet. Now you should have a PPP account and Windows 95 should have the Dial-Up Adapter and the TCP/IP -> Dialup network components installed.

Press the Start button from the Task-bar at the bottom of the screen.

Select Settings from the menu.

Next, select Control Panel from the next menu.

Now, Double-click on the Network icon and this will open a window titled Network.

In the List box of installed network components single click on TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter. This will ungrey the buttons under the list box.

Setting up a Dial-Up Icon.

From the desktop double-click on the My Computer icon.

In this window, usually at the bottom, is an icon named Dial-Up Networking, double-click on this icon which will open a new window titled Dial-Up Networking.

Double-click the Make New Connection icon.

First enter a name for the connection (in can be anything you like; we suggest thing.net). Next, you will select a modem type. When you have finished this single-click on the Next button.

This next screen will ask you about the phone number you will be dialing. For access numbers other than NYC click here. In Manhattan (area code 212) dial 507 1410. When you are finished here single-click on the Next button.

At the next screen single-click on the Finish button.

You will now see a new icon to be used to dial into thing.net.

Single click on the new icon and select Properties from the menu.

In the section labeled Connect using single-click on the Server Type button. This will bring you to a window titled Server Types.

There is a pull down menu under Type of Dial-Up Server you want to select PPP: Windows 95, Windows NT, Internet.

Under the section titled Advanced Options make sure that Log on to network is NOT checked.

Under the section titled Allowed Network Protocols make sure that only TCP/IP is checked.

Single-click on the OK button, and then single-click on the OK button again.

Connecting

Now everything is ready for you to dial into thing.net. Double-click on your newly formed icon.

At the Connect To window set your username to your thing.net username and your password to your thing.net password.

Single-click on the Connect button.

Windows 95 will now dial thing.net. After it connects, you will get a connection confirmation window:
